What:

The use of non-intrusive geophysical techniques by the environmental industry has become a valuable tool for assessing a variety of sites; most commonly those with salt-contamination. This has partially been due to increasing regulatory requirements for oil & gas companies to understand their liabilities associated with contamination and partially due to an improved understanding of various geophysical techniques and their capabilities.

The presentation of Environment Geophysics & Evaluation 101 has been prepared specifically to provide surface landmen with an introduction to various geophysical techniques (e.g. EM, ERI, Ohm Mapper), the many benefits that can be gained through their use and the risk/pitfalls that can arise with improper data collection, interpretation and reporting. The presentation will also include a discussion on how the geophysical results can be used to develop reclamation/remediation plans.

Instructors:

Dr. Jim Henderson

Dr. Jim Henderson is the Director of Geophysics & Consulting with 43 years of experience in applied geophysics and project management. He has managed environmental geophysical projects in all western provinces and northern territories. He guest lectures on Environmental Geophysics in the Environmental Management program at the University of Calgary. He has co-authored a number of papers on the Misconceptions of Environmental Geophysics. Dr. Henderson is a Professional Geophysicist with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta. He is also a Fellow of the Geoscientists of Canada and an Honorary Fellow of the Engineers of Canada.

Tim Chidlaw

Tim Chidlaw is the Director of Environment for WSP’s Southern Alberta Operations with 21 years of experience in environmental consulting and project management. He has managed and completed site assessment, remediation and reclamation projects programs for upstream oil and gas, commercial and industrial clientele in Alberta, Saskatchewan, British Columbia, Manitoba, and the Northwest Territories.

His expertise include: Phase I, II and III Environmental Site Assessments, liability assessments, site audits, pre-disturbance assessments, UST closure reports, spill clean-up activities and detailed reclamation assessments. He has provided expert witness testimony in both public and private proceedings for various types of environmental impacts and is versed in regulatory liaison, public and First Nation consultation activities. Mr. Chidlaw is a Professional Agrologist with the Alberta, British Columbia and Saskatchewan Institutes of Agrology.
